District Five

North-East

1) MARRIAGE: Do you support or oppose legislation necessary to reverse the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which imposed same-sex marriage on all 50 states?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Support
Comment America is facing an all-out assault on Christian values. The effort to normalize behavior that violates biblical principles is an orchestrated effort to undermine the the [sic] nuclear family structure and to water down Christian values. Together, we must combat this with Christian love and a resolute purpose.
2) ABORTION: Do you support or oppose the 1973 Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment The value and dignity of human life is a critical component of the Christian value system. Care and concern for the unborn is the extension of the selfless call of a Christian walk.
3) PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Do you support or oppose giving tax dollars to Planned Parenthood?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment Planned Parenthood masquerades as a women’s health clinic, but primarily, they are an abortion provider. Public money should be taken away from this organization as long as they provide abortions.
4) RELIGIOUS LIBERTY: Do you support or oppose legislation to ensure government non-discrimination in matters of religious beliefs and moral convictions with regards to marriage, the sanctity of human life, or human sexuality?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Support
Comment Owners of a private business choosing to bake cakes for weddings should not be forced to bake a cake against their will. The freedom of religion is going to be an important topic in the very near future because it is being used against us by those who claim their religion is protected. A religion that calls for, and enforces, the death penalty if you leave the religion (laws of apostasy) isn’t really a religion. The freedom of religion must include the free will to leave the religion without fear, terror or death.
5) PROTECTED CLASSES: Do you support or oppose legislation that would include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes that are protected from discrimination?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment The normalization of any and all forms of sexual behavior is an orchestrated effort to destroy the moral fabric of the Christian Church in America.
6) SD HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC TRANSGENDER POLICY:
Do you support or oppose legislation to void the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s transgender policy, which allows a student to play on a sanctioned sports team contrary to his or her biological sex?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Support
Comment I think the transgender policy is wrong. However, I think the proper way to overturn this action is with public outcry, not necessarily through legislative action. People need to organize and create a public movement, and I would be willing to lead that movement.
7) MEDICAID EXPANSION: Do you support or oppose Medicaid expansion in South Dakota?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment The federal government is increasing the number of people on assistance and is offloading the costs onto the states. As the federal government becomes more insolvent, this will become a major issue. We should be looking to reduce the number of dependents on welfare assistance, not increase it.
8) EDUCATION: Do you support or oppose the national education standards and testing methodology often referred to as “Common Core”?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment I oppose all efforts to increase federal control over education. I am in favor of defunding the Federal Department of Education.
9) VIDEO LOTTERY: Do you support or oppose the expansion of video lottery in South Dakota?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment Video Lottery and gambling isn’t a great income source for South Dakota. Too many families are broken up or bankrupted by addiction. However, gambling is a part of our state”s funding mechanism. I am in favor of having gamblers provide proof they are not on public assistance before they can gamble.
10) PAYDAY LOANS: Do you support or oppose a maximum interest rate for payday loan companies?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Support
Comment I think it is more important to actually have a mandatory class before graduating high school on personal finance, interest rates and budgeting. I will introduce this bill and tirelessly work for its passage.
11) GUN RIGHTS: Do you support or oppose legislation to allow concealed carry of firearms without a permit? This would not eliminate concealed carry permit availability required for reciprocity with other states
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment I am a huge 2nd amendment person. The right to bear arms is for self defense and the defense of those around us, not simply for hunting. However, I believe concealing and carrying is a major life decision, and the current system of permitting through the sheriff’s department is appropriate.
12) MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Do you support or oppose legislation to allow the medical use of marijuana?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment Medical marijuana, Hemp and recreational use of marijuana have the same proponents. I think we will find that long term use of marijuana has detrimental effects on health and wellness.
13) STUDENT PHYSICAL PRIVACY: Do you support or oppose legislation that would restrict access to restrooms and locker rooms in public schools according to the student’s biological sex?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Support
Comment Again, there is an orchestrated effort to challenge the belief system of Christianity and religious values that have lasted throughout time. We need to understand how and why society is being changed so rapidly, and learn to push back more effectively.
14) TAXATION: Do you support or oppose legislation that would exempt taxation on food and/or clothing?
D House Michele Alvine –
I House Charles “Chuck” Haan –
R House Nancy York –
R House Hugh M. Bartels –
R Senate Neal Tapio – Oppose
Comment We have a shortage of funding for government. Everyone should pay a little for the services provided. Welfare benefits and food stamps are currently not taxed.
