1) MARRIAGE: Do you support or oppose legislation necessary to reverse the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which imposed same-sex marriage on all 50 states?

Comment Marriage: This should be determined by each individual state not legislated from the federal level.
2) ABORTION: Do you support or oppose the 1973 Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision?

Comment Abortion: I personally do not support abortion, however, I do understand there are extreme circumstances such as endangerment of life where this option may need to be considered.
3) PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Do you support or oppose giving tax dollars to Planned Parenthood?

Comment Planned Parenthood:
I am not sure why Planned Parenthood is the only organization that is singled out in this survey. Giving tax dollars to any specialized organization such as this should be limited.
4) RELIGIOUS LIBERTY: Do you support or oppose legislation to ensure government non-discrimination in matters of religious beliefs and moral convictions with regards to marriage, the sanctity of human life, or human sexuality?

Comment Religious Liberty:
I am not certain religious liberty is an issue our government should be involved in legislating. If pursued there are many factors that will require careful consideration due to the sensitive nature of the topics this entails.
5) PROTECTED CLASSES: Do you support or oppose legislation that would include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes that are protected from discrimination?

Comment Protective Classifications: I feel there are many factors surrounding this issue which requires careful consideration before supporting or opposing this issue.
6) SD HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC TRANSGENDER POLICY:
Do you support or oppose legislation to void the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s transgender policy, which allows a student to play on a sanctioned sports team contrary to his or her biological sex?

I am not sure South Dakotans are prepared to take on the implementation of legislation relating to this practice.

Education:
The federal law and mandates as it existed in the past have recently changed. Currently, the SD Department of Education is engaged in a study of the new ESSA federal requirements. They are in the process of identifying potential changes as it relates to the issues you have presented in this question. Study groups have been created which involve participation from stakeholders, such as parents, educators, local and state decision makers to name a few. I will continue to follow the outcomes.

I am a believer in the right to own and bear firearms. I possess a concealed weapon permit and I do not feel limited in my right to own firearms. A paramount concern for me is responsible firearm use and possession.

Comment Medical Marijuana:
Medical marijuana use has proven to have merit in special circumstances. The question becomes, how will legislation ensure responsible use for medical purposes only?
13) STUDENT PHYSICAL PRIVACY: Do you support or oppose legislation that would restrict access to restrooms and locker rooms in public schools according to the student’s biological sex?

Comment Student Physical Privacy:
I think there is a need for our state to carefully analyze the impact of legislation relating to this issue. Especially the concern of a potential violation of a person’s civil rights. I believe Governor Daugaard realized there could be legal ramifications as well as recognizing there is a humanistic side to this issue.
14) TAXATION: Do you support or oppose legislation that would exempt taxation on food and/or clothing?

Comment Taxation:
How will the state replace the revenue if legislation is adopted to exempt taxation on these items? Careful consideration of the outcomes for exempting taxation will need extensive review as to pros and cons relating to it.
