School Board – Rapid City

Area 6

Brian Johnson

What are your top 2 priorities if elected? What is the proper role of Government?

Why are you the best candidate for the job?

As a lifelong resident of Rapid City and a proud graduate of our public schools, I care deeply about the future of our district. I was fortunate to receive a strong education here, and I want the same — or better — for my grandchildren and every student in our community. The recent decline in test scores and loss of confidence in the district compelled me to step forward.
I bring a commitment to common-sense decision making, a practical approach to budgeting, and a dedication to putting educators and students first. My top priorities include fiscal responsibility that supports our teachers, improving academic outcomes, and addressing school infrastructure to ensure safe, effective learning environments.
Trust is essential to any functioning school district. I will advocate for clear, consistent communication between the board, staff, and community. That includes transparent hiring, or firing practices, consistent enforcement of policies, and adherence to due process. Informed decision-making starts with facts and proper procedures.
The board must model ethical behavior. I support reviewing and implementing policies that ensure all employees are treated with respect and professionalism.
Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. I support a data-driven review of disciplinary actions to identify and address any disparities. If patterns emerge, we must ask tough questions and make necessary changes. We must also ensure families are engaged and students are encouraged to pursue advanced academic programs when they show interest or potential.
Teachers are one of our greatest assets. Retaining them requires more than competitive pay. I will advocate not only for prioritizing funds for teacher compensation and benefits but also for creating an environment where educators feel heard, supported, and respected.
I support a budget strategy that examines administrative costs, focuses spending on classrooms, and invests in resources that directly impact student learning. Long term, we need a district culture where great teachers want to stay and grow their careers.
As a board member, I will remain accessible and actively listen to the people most affected by our decisions — students, families, and educators. Policy shouldn’t happen in a vacuum; it must reflect the voices of the community it serves.
