First, I appreciate the opportunity to share my feelings on topics of mutual importance. I certainly value our relationship over the years, along with your wise counsel and support. I’ve always considered elected office as an opportunity to work and serve the people. To me, it’s work. It’s not a title. So, my firm belief is that anyone in elected office should have the heart of a servant.
My faith and family drive every decision I make. I lost my wife of 43 years, Jean, in November of 2021 to sarcoma, a cancer that we didn’t plan for or anticipate. But, even through those tough days, Jean was a light of faith and hope. “If you have faith, you have hope,” she would say to me and our kids. That left a mark on my heart that will forever bring me back to the most important aspect of my life: my faith.
Through my walk in faith, I’ve also found peace in that while we’ve all had to recognize and deal with a tremendous loss, we all have a role to play in how to move forward. Together, as a family, we’ve done that. I’m so proud of my kids and grandkids for sticking with me through this journey. As a dad and grandpa, there’s nothing more important than making sure they’re on the right path as well. Through it all, we’ve grown stronger. And, I couldn’t be more proud.
Faith is my foundation. It drives the work that’s important to South Dakotans. I fight every day to make our state and country safe; to put more money back in the pockets of taxpayers; to get the federal government off your back and out of your pocketbook; and to create a state and nation that the next generation can be proud of. That’s how I work as a U.S. Senator, but it’s also the work of a dad and grandpa. I think a lot of us are thinking about these challenges, and in different ways, working on the same goal. I figure that my work is just an extension of what every other South Dakotan would be focused on.
I’ve tried to let my competitors speak for themselves and let their records reflect their values. A little homework will show extreme differences of opinion on social matters. There are several areas that are incredibly important for people to understand. (WORD LIMIT)
